3rd-Jun-2008 05:25 pm - The Problem of Susan
ws: hamlet
Quite some time ago, [info]elisem asked me if I would read Neil Gaiman's story, "The Problem of Susan" (Fragile Things, New York: William Morrow, 2006: 181-190) and write about it. And, well, Fourth Street is coming up, and I am procrastinating like a crazy procrastinating thing, and I finally got around to it.

Spoilers both for the Gaiman story and for, inevitably, C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia.

I used the phrase the sexual politics of Narnia in a reply to [info]cija, and dude, it's too good and too mind-blowing to waste.

Many many thanks, btw, to [info]papersky and [info]cija who have been going back-and-forth with me and providing useful bits of information and analysis in the comments to these posts. None of what follows is their fault (*g*), although much of it resounds to their virtue.

[ETA, 3/7/03: Added a paragraph down at the end about Aslan.]

I think I'm going to have to do a separate post on women, romance (thanks, [info]papersky!), and adulthood in the Chronicles of Narnia. So this is just going to finish up with my remarks on the last two books.

Ooh, look. Truepenny's got more Things to Say about Narnia. Shock. Amazement. Also, my opinions are, um, decided and often intemperately worded, especially in regards to The Horse and His Boy. Just so you know.

I started a jeremiad at [info]heresluck this afternoon whilst we were allegedly working on our Firefly abstract, and then said, "This is probably an LJ post." And now it's going to be.
